Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical periodontal treatment used to manage gum disease by removing plaque and tartar buildup beneath the gumline. It is often recommended for patients with signs of early to moderate periodontal disease, such as gum inflammation, bleeding, or pocketing around the teeth. The procedure has two parts:

  • Scaling involves carefully removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacterial toxins from the tooth surfaces, especially below the gumline.
  • Root planing smooths the root surfaces to help the gums reattach to the teeth and reduce future bacterial buildup.

This treatment helps reduce inflammation, shrink periodontal pockets, and prevent further progression of gum disease. Depending on the severity, it may be done under local anesthesia and completed over one or more visits. Follow-up care, including good oral hygiene and regular maintenance visits, is essential for long-term success.
