Laser-Assisted Frenectomy

A laser-assisted frenectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove or modify a frenum—a small band of tissue that connects the lips, cheeks, or tongue to the gums or underlying bone. An overly tight or prominent frenum can contribute to issues such as gum recession, spacing between teeth (diastema), speech difficulties, or restricted tongue movement (tongue-tie).

Using a specialized dental laser, the periodontist can precisely and gently release the frenum without the need for traditional surgical instruments. The laser cauterizes the tissue as it works, which minimizes bleeding, reduces discomfort, and often shortens healing time. In most cases, stitches are not needed, further improving patient comfort and recovery.

Laser-assisted frenectomy is commonly recommended for both children and adults when the frenum is interfering with oral function, orthodontic treatment, or periodontal health. The procedure is typically quick, performed under local anesthesia, and associated with minimal post-operative discomfort and downtime.
